I Want to Quit the Gym


I don’t actually want to quit the gym, but what do you do when you don’t like your gym and your options are very limited?

This is where I’m at right now.

I’ve been living in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories for three months and it’s been a great experience so far.  The weather is great, the scenery is amazing, the people are friendly, there are so many activities to do outside (I played a lot of softball and beach volleyball this summer along with hiking camping, fishing, boating, patio hopping, beer drinking…) BUT when it comes to regular weight training, there are only two gyms here in the city and that doesn’t leave much for choice or variety.

When we first got here we scoped them both out and decided on one over the other based on friendliness, first impressions and recommendations from several people.  But here we are three months later and I wish we could say we have buyers remorse but it’s not even that at this point, I just simply don’t like my gym and I don’t think the other option is any better and I’m not sure what to do about it.

Now, there are only two options for standard gyms in YK, but what I did find out three weeks ago is that there is a Martial Arts Centre here that is also a CrossFit gym.  Once I heard this news I immediately contact the owner and got myself a free session in there.  It had been a long time since I had had my ass kicked in this manner by someone like Coach Guthrie or Julie Mac and I was in dire need, so off we went.

After a kick-ass session I was instantly sold on this place because they had just what I was looking for and I had had enough of my other gym and even though the monthly membership was double the already quite expensive membership of the other gym, I was ready to sign up right then and there.  As much as I wanted to jump right in there, on the advice of my oh so smart and beautiful lady, I decided to sleep on it and now that I’ve taken about 4 weeks to think it over, I’m actually torn as to what I want to do…

There are benefits and downfalls to each gym and I’m not sure which is more important.  The gym I currently attend does not offer HIIT training, it doesn’t have kettlebells for me to use, it doesn’t have a room that I could have access to do these kinds of workouts if I wanted to put myself through one, the weight room is tiny and worst of all it so many of those “gym guys” that I hate, I can’t handle it.  On the other hand, the Crossfit gym has kettlebells and HIIT and boxing and I love the atmosphere but that’s it. As much as I love kettlebells and CrossFit I’m also a huge fan of weight training and I don’t think I can ever give it up and having the option to do so is key, not to mention that having the ability to go for a run on the treadmill when it’s -40 C this winter is a must for the missus.

Ideally, I would have enough money to create my own gym and be able to offer everything to everyone, but at this point in time, I’m still stuck paying for my gym membership and I don’t know what to do…

Anyone have any advice?


  1. It’s not a solution, per se, but Lucas and I have gotten a lot of value out of these at-home workouts:


    We have dumbbells and a pull-up bar, and even though a lot of the exercise are body weight, they are HARD. Plus, I have an indoor trainer for my bike.

    I still go to the gym several times a week, but Lucas doesn’t have a membership and he’s in better shape now than he was when he was hitting the weights 3-4 times a week.

    • Thanks for the suggestions… I can’t stand the chick on BodyRock… She’s in wicked shape, her workouts are great, but she annoys me to no end. I’ve never done P90X but I’d be willing to try it. But at the same time, I don’t have an hour a day to workout… I’m usually in and out of the gym in less than 45 mins. Plus, like I mentioned, I really love straight up weight training. If it wasn’t for that, I’d leave my gym… It’s just there’s something about picking up heavy weights and tossing them around for a great workout that I love!

  2. I would buy a barbell and some weights for weight training purposes at home, and sign up to the Crossfit gym….

    but I just want to say that the episode of Friends that you are referring to is the best episode ever. The YouTube clip is permanently marked on my favourites bar 😛
